Petrus Pomerol
The Pomerol region is the smallest of Bordeaux’s major appellations and there are around 150 wine producers located in the region with around 740 hectares of vineyards. They produce as few as 1,000 cases of wine per year, which adds to the value of these fine wines.
The best Pomerol vineyards are planted on a terroir of blue coloured clay in the Pomerol plateau and have a rare subsoil of smecite clay that is said to be 40 million years old, and the gravelly soil that surrounds this special clay subsoil is said to be one million years old.
The grapes are picked in a single afternoon to prevent due diluting the quality of the grapes and the juice, and it’s rumoured that each grape is plucked individually in perfectionist harvesting.
Renowned expert Robert Parker describes the Château Pétrus that produces the famous Petrus red wine as: “The undisputed king of Pomerol and probably the most famous red wine in the world.” He continued to praise the wine by saying: “There have been few Bordeaux wines that match this property for its extraordinary combination of power, richness, complexity and elegance.”

Cheval Blanc
The Château Cheval Blanc is categorised among the top four wineries to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Class (A), alongside Château Angelus, Château Pavie and Château Ausone. Château Cheval Blanc’s history dates back to 1832 when it was purchased by Jean-Jacques Ducasse and over twenty years, this owner invested in individual plots of land from the neighbouring Château Figeac.
This Château is located in the northwest of St-Emilion, which is close to La Conseillante and neighbours l’Evangile in Pomerol. The estate encompasses 42 hectares, 37 of which are planted with vines. The vines that are planted on the property make up 57% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot alongside Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon that make up the remainder.
Château Cheval Blanc will tend to produce 6,000 cases of the Grand Vin and 2,500 cases of the second wine, so-called “Le Petit Cheval”. The qualities of this fine wine come from the terroir and the close proximity to Pomerol with its gravelly soils that are perfect for producing Cabernet Franc grape varieties.
