The wine’s climatic conditions
Back in 1982, there was an unusually mild winter with the temperatures in January, February and March being higher on average to those recorded compared to previous years, and there wasn’t as much rainfall either. Therefore, the vegetation cycle for this vintage started quickly and budbreak for all three red grape varieties was even from the 30th March.
The unseasonably warm weather continued into April and May and there was a respite with some rainfall in June. The flowering took place between 30th May and the 30th June, an average of 12 days earlier than usual, which varied between each grape variety.
The dry weather continued throughout July of 1982, which brought a heatwave and with it a violent storm on the 30th July. August continued with fine weather without the excessive heat from the previous month and experienced little rainfall, with light showers during the first week that was welcomed by the vines.
During the flowering of the vines, the precocity was attenuated in early summer when the maturation slowed slightly due to the higher temperatures and variation started during the first days in August. The grapes were in a fantastic state and matured in perfect weather conditions in September, which gave rise to the expectation of a good quality vintage.
A note on the label
Châteaux Mouton Rothschild invites renowned artists to design their wine labels each year and for the 1982 vintage, artist John Huston was invited to design and include a dedication on the fine wine label.
John Huston (1906 – 1987) was known as a film director, boxer, art lover, writer, horse trainer, big-game hunter and actor. He was also a very talented painter from an early age and the watercolour for the Mouton Rothschild 1982 label is one of the very last paintings he completed.
Depicting the Châteaux’s iconic ram leaping elegantly next to a bunch of grapes in the sunshine, it is a sensual and graceful image conveyed with deep, warm colours. The design returns to represent the Châteaux’s brand and symbol of the ram.
In his dedication, John Huston wrote: “In celebration of my beloved friend Baron Philippe’s sixtieth harvest at Mouton.” This was a statement demonstrating his friendship with Baron Philippe and his affection for the Châteaux that enchanted him.

“This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box.”

“The wine still has a dense purple colour, a beautiful sweet nose of crème de cassis, spring flowers, forest floor and a touch of cedar wood. It is a beauty, full-bodied and probably closest in style and quality to their famous 1959, which has always eclipsed the more renowned 1961 in tastings.”
