Business leaders invited to pit their palates to identify a bottle worth a thousand quid

Business leaders in Birmingham will be putting their wine tasting skills to the test today in an unusual blind-tasting challenge to see if they can distinguish between a bottle costing £1,000 and one priced £7.

Wine Tasting

The challenge has been thrown down to those attending a special networking session organised by Edge Creative Consultancy at the Hyatt Hotel.

Experts from APM Wine Investment will be giving the event attendees the chance to sample the contents from three unmarked bottles – one costing £1,000 (equivalent to £150 a glass); a high-end supermarket tipple priced at £25; and a £7 bottle of plonk.

A Wine & Spirit Education Trust-qualified director will guide samplers through the blind tasting as they pit their palates against their peers.

APM Wine Investment has created the equivalent of a private client stockbrokerage where the “denominator is fine wine, supported by market-leading research, quantitative analysis techniques more usually associated with fund management, and algorithm-lead stock selection processes”.

However, director David Jackson said he was keen to stress that the tastings were intended as a bit of fun.

“Whilst the team at APM take the business of wine investment very seriously, I doubt anyone would begrudge us for using our area of expertise as a bare-faced excuse to indulge in the wonderful underlying product…these events are great fun, and often an opportunity for people to experience wines they might not otherwise have the pleasure of trying,” he said.
