Bordeaux 2009

The 2009 vintage has been heralded as an excellent vintage by all the major critics and James Suckling is no exception. On the 14th February he revealed his scores and nine wines received a perfect 100 points.

The wines to receive three figure ratings are Lafite Rothschild, Margaux, Latour, Haut-Brion, Ausone, Cos d’Estournel, Montrose, Vieux Château Certan and Lafleur.

Suckling writes " Wine lovers who already purchased 2009 Bordeaux as futures or en primeur are never going to be disappointed with the quality in the bottle. And investors in the vintage for the long-term should be happy considering it will be revered for decades to come and should increase in value – although probably not in the short term, with a few exceptions due to the high prices paid at the beginning."

Although en primeur prices for the 2009 vintage have been extremely high, the wines are commanding high points with the critics. Parker is expected to reveal his in bottle scores at the end of the month and if he gives the coveted 100 points, we can expect prices to climb.

Our current tips for February: Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Haut Brion and Ausone should show some fantastic gains over the long term. Montrose, Vieux Château Certan, and Cos d’Estournel have more palatable price tags compared to the first growths and should be looked at for the medium term.
